For those who don't know anything about the emcee name Mickey Factz, just prepare yourself for an experience like none other. He is the ideal vision for hip hops future, and one who continues to paint vivid, yet at times complex thoughts on wax. My introduction to Factz came via Back To The Future - FlashbackVol.1 sometime in 2007. I can't say I was impressed upon first listen. Maybe it was because I was working out while listening and not really focused on the project. That led me to set it aside, and unfortunately never spun it again. Sorry Factz! As this introduction fortunately wouldn't be his end, Factz later dropped the solid, Heaven's Fallout. It took me a minute to peep the project (Black Milk's - Popular Demand pretty much took over my 2007), but somewhere in 2008 after hearing a set of leaks from him, I took back to my pc for Heaven's Fallout and got to rockin'. Now in 2010, after a year long break, Factz returns with The Dark Phoenix #ALPHA. It's a push forward from the mind of a very personal emcee and continues to show Factz grinding his own path to a creative and limitless sound. Don't let this work go without a few proper listens. Factz is not on some b.s. Peep the content on both these tracks below, and get your free download via his site. Support hip hop NOT hip pop!
I waited up 'til 3 am Christmas morning, but Miss Jack Davey and Brook D'Leau b.k.a J*Davey, I guess were making us wait for the niceness that is Boudoir Synema: The Great Mistapes. I got a chance to listen to it before heading off to Orlando for the weekend, and it's a pretty short, but solid piece of work. This is the first of a 3 part series, so enjoy it, and thanks to J*Davey for granting us this project. And if you're new to the group, after checking this project, support last years The Beauty In Distortion/The Land of The Lost. Download Boudoir Synema: The Great Mistapeshere.
East London & Kent Coast UK representatives, Amede pronounced (AM-EDDIE) - the voice, and producer/engineer The Soundsmith are a deeply creative duo that's all about making good music. Together, they unite a collection of sounds stemming from soul break beats & hip hop samples, and reaching towards futuristic, ambient vibes with a lounge effect to bring their dream stage like music to the forefront. My beginings with the group are extremely new and came via Sexy Beast Vol 5 by DJ SD & Jus One. I liked what i heard, so off to their myspace I went to find out more about the group. I bought a joint off their Flat 17 - EP, and got a free download of a project entitled Sound Scapes via their website. Here's what Amede had to say about Sound Scapes:
"Sound Scapes is a 24 track album which in a nutshell, reveals all my ways of working and snippits of vocal work soon to come in 2010. The Sound Scapes touch on discrepant sampled based hip hop soul built on my mpc, sparse soulful and abstract vocals to some sonic sound studies to soak your mind in."
Give them a listen. Download the project here, and look out for new works to come in 2010. Support good music.
Turn on any urban radio station and you surely won't hear anything remotely close to the uniquely talented and inspiring measure known as Jaspects. These 6 ATLiens, defy every challenge that comes with making music in order to make a sound that is unrivaled to none. Graduates of Morehouse College music department, the formally trained musicians will have you sitting still, brooding as you live within their music for 48 minutes. Traditional jazz instrumentation and futuristic vibes are a major part of this album's groove. I kid you not, this is some next level ish which in no fashion suggests that this group is trying to be different - they just are! The Polkadotted Stripe is the groups fourth album. You can find three of their works here. Young brothers like these are a rarity. They deserve the support of all who enjoy charismatic, ingenious and perfectly crafted music. I'm mad late on the discovery, but not ashamed by far.
Zone4/Interscope recording artist, Jared Evan hits hard with this banger. Produced by the 21 year old, New York native, he spits three short tales over solid drums, synth stabs and just the right amount of auto-tune to keep my head nodding. His mixtape, Radio In My Head is available for free download here. I'm on the fence about it, but you be your own judge.
The Brooklyn/Bronx connection of hip-hop vets, OC & AG take the music back to its essence with boom-bap tracks and true lyricism on their long awaited debut, Oasis. The classic "Young With Style" has the D.I.T.C (Diggin' In The Crates) legends gettin' busy, spittin' lyrical finesse & metaphors that instantly generate a "yo, you heard what he said" response over the slow knock by producers Show and KC. This joint takes me back to 97' with this cut from O's sophomore album, Jewelz. Oasis in stores now!
I believe, New York native, Outasight is about to drop a classic on Dec 15th! Coming with a mode different from his peers in the game, this dude turns loose on the ill, 6th Sense produced, "Catch Me If You Can." Showcasing his unorthodox style of singing and emceeing over the smooth, bottom heavy beat - Outasight coolly let's his rock star flow letting cats know he doesn't have time to waste. Make sure to check for his debut, Further next week Tuesday (12/15).
The organic feel of "Natural" is just one of many jewels from the arsenal of the higly underrated, yet superbly artistic, Yahzarah. Over a mild, jazzy melody, the D.C. native flows a sensuous thought about a man in her life who seemingly captivates her and leaves her in a mental trance. Then again, I get the feeling she's talking about music and how it obsesses her existence. Whatever the case, it's sweet soul music to the ears. Keep an eye out for the highly anticipated The Ballad Of Miss. Purple St. James.
I love this joint right here! Jamaica Queens representatives, NickyGuiland & Casey Benjamin - A.K.A HEAVy, lay down an intimate groove detailing the better days of a relationship now destined for "Change." The snazzy production by Casey, arranges the perfect scene for Nicky's impassioned outcry. The combination makes for a winning track from start to finish. As a matter of fact, the whole album is a gem. Get it here.
After nearly a decade of being off scene, Philly native, Shareese Ballard, b.k.a. Res returns with her 2nd LP, Black.Girls.Rock. The project consist of past unreleased songs written during her Geffen Records days and newly penned tracks that continue the story from her 2001 debut, How I Do. This woman of substance has a sound exclusively her own which takes soul felt rock tunes and fuses them with hip-hop, folk and reggae-dub. Constantly mixing it up, you can find Res vibing with her group, Idle Warship, introduced last year as a triple hot pairing of Talib Kweliand Graph Noble. Download Black.Girls.Rock. from Res' website and Party Robot from Idle Warship's myspace for free while they last.
Featured below are "Angry" from the current - a jewel of a track discussing the frustrated emotions caused by a mate's inconsiderate ways, and "700 Mile Situation" from her debut - a slow dub track where Res tries to deal with the impulsive travels of a lover who's seemingly afraid to stay close by. Stay tuned for more to come from this spirited talent, and be sure to patronize Res' previous effort.
I've been a fan of Canadian rapper/singer, k-os since I took a chance buying his debut Exit back in 2002. What I like about k-os is his ability to combine an assortment of musical genres as a backdrop to promote his conscious and positive lyrics. His music is mature and ever progressing, a contribution he can cite back to his Trinidadian upbringing by Jehovah Witness parents. In the video above he links up with fellow Canadian rapper, Saukrates and Nelly Furtado for the 3rd single off Yes!, his 4th album to date (which is finally being released in the states on November 17th). Give him a listen for yourself, and support good hip hop.
